Mon personnage emblématique : Kofi Annan

Kofi Annan, né à Kumasi, une région du Nord du Ghana, le 8 Avril 1938, a été Secrétaire général de l’Organisation des Nations Unies (ONU) pendant 9 ans, entre 1997 et 2006.

Mr Annan est né dans une famille aristocratique Ghanéenne et a étudié tout d’abord à l’université de Kumasi afin d’achever sa licence d’économie au Macalester College aux Etats-Unis. Il effectue ses études de troisième cycle à l’Institut universitaire des hautes études internationales à Genève, pour finir par obtenir son diplôme de maîtrise en sciences de gestion au Massaschussets Institute of Technology.

Avant de devenir Secrétaire Général de l’ONU le 01 Janvier 1997, il a été Coordonateur des Nations Unies, Sous-Secrétaire général jusqu’en 1993 et également Secrétaire général adjoint aux opérations de maintien de la paix jusqu’en Février 1996.

Dans sa lutte pour maintenir l’engagement de la communauté internationale en faveur de l’Afrique, continent très désavantagé, il a proposé ses services dans plusieurs situations politiquement délicates . On peut citer par exemple sa tentative au Nigéria en 1998 pour aider ce pays à promouvoir la transition à un pouvoir civil. D’autres actions hors Afrique peuvent être mentionnées comme par exemple la mise en place certaines négociations pacifiques entre les Israéliens et les Palestiniens afin qu’il puissent règler leurs différends, ou encore sa tentative pour obtenir que l’Iraq respecte les résolutions du Conseil de Sécurité en 1998.
Il s’est également engagé dans plusieurs causes comme par exemple le « pacte mondial « pour l’amélioration de la condition de la femme, la lutte pour l’élimination de la pauvreté et de de l’inégalité, l’amélioration de l’éducation, la réduction du VIH, la préservation de l’environnement, et biens d’autres.

Du fait de ces différentes actions et à son rôle déterminant dans l'insufflation d’une nouvelle vie à l’ONU, c’est donc tout naturellement que le 10 Décembre 2001, il reçoit le prix Nobel de la Paix.

Par ailleurs, il est à la tête d’une fondation depuis 2007, dont le but est de promouvoir une meilleure gouvernance mondiale et renforcer la capacité des pays et des populations à créer un climat de sécurité dans le monde, et à préserver l’environnement.

Kofi Annan , born in kumasi , a region of the north Ghana , the 8th April 1938 , has been the  general secretary of the United Nations (UN) during 9 years , between 1997 and 2006 .
Mr Annan is born in an aristocrat's Ghanaian family   and firstly learnt at the university of Kumasi and finish his economic's license in McAlester College in USA .He makes his studies of the third cycle to the university Institute of the high international studies in Geneva, eventually obtain his Master's degree in sciences of management in Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Before to become the general secretary of the UN the 1st january 1997, he has been Coordinator of the United Nations, General undersecretary until 1993 and also  general secretary in the operations of preservation of the peace until February, 1996.
In his fight  to maintain the commitment of the international community in favor of Africa, very disadvantaged continent, he proposed his services in several politically delicate situations. We can quote for example his attempt in Nigeria in 1998 to help this country to promote the transition to a civil power. Other actions  except Africa can be mentioned as for example the implementation of some peaceful negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians so that they can solve   their disputes, or still his attempt to obtain that Iraq respects UN Security's Council Resolutions in 1998.He also made a commitment in several causes as for example the << world pact >> for the improvement of the condition of the woman, his fights for the elimination of the poverty and the disparity, the improvement of the education, the reduction of the HIV, the environmental protection,and many others.
Because of these various actions and in his role determining in the insufflation of a new life to the UN, it is then naturally that on December 10th, 2001, he receives the Nobel Peace Prize.

Besides, he is at the head of a foundation since 2007, which the goal is to promote a better world governance and to strengthen the capacity of the countries and populations to create a climate of safety in the world, and to protect the environment.
